After Lana, The Matrix co-director Lilly Wachowski has also come out as transgender

She was about to be outed by the Daily Mail, so decided to make the announcement herself.

Director Lilly Wachowski – formerly known as Andy – has announced that she is transgender, but admitted that she was forced to make the announcement when the Daily Mail threatened to run a story about her.

Wachowski’s sibling Lana, who co-directed The Matrix with Lilly, came out in 2012. She was formerly known as Larry.

“I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly,” Wachowski wrote in a piece for Chicago’s Windy City Times.

“You know, when you’re living as an out transgender person it’s kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted – needed – some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable. But apparently I don’t get to decide this.”

Lilly referred to a “threatened public outing against my will” by the Daily Mail, and added, “We continue to be demonised and vilified in the media where attack ads portray us as potential predators to keep us from even using the goddamn bathroom.

“So yeah, I’m transgender. And yeah, I’ve transitioned.”

As well as The Matrix and its two sequels, the Wachowskis have directed Bound, Cloud Atlas, Speed Racer, Jupiter Ascending and the Netflix TV series Sense8.
