Here are the EIGHT movies coming to cinemas in August we’re very excited about

Rory Cashin

For the days when the sun decides not to come out…

Summer blockbuster season isn’t QUITE over yet, so we’ve still got some BIG EXPLOSIVE movies to choose from in August, but we’re also heading into Oscar-territory, as well as Halloween, so you’ve got a mix of big awards magnets, as well as some proper scary movies to choose from!

If you haven’t heard of it yet, the new MyOmniPass from Omniplex Cinemas entitles subscribers to one ticket to every standard movie, 10% off your cinema goodies, 10% off any extra tickets purchased online for your friends, free upgrades of MyOmniPass tickets to the MAXX and Recline shows, and exclusive screenings just for MyOmniPass members.

So, yeah, you’d get to see all seven of these movies for less than €20 a month!

FAST & FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW (Thursday 1 August)

Listen, you either love movies that are both fast and furious (like us) or you don’t (not like us). Summer is all about explosions and ridiculous stunts and Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson slagging each other to pieces!

But don’t take our word for it, when you can hear what the movie’s big bad guy Idris Elba has to say about it!

THE ANGRY BIRDS 2 (Friday 2 August)

The sequel to the movie based of the mobile game, with the all-star voice cast of birds and pigs forced to team up this time when a bigger threat from a nearby island arrives and could potentially destroy their homes and their peaceful alliance!

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (Friday 9 August)

A Pakistani teenage growing up in Eighties Britain finds an escape when he is introduced to the music of Bruce Springsteen. The early word on this has been nothing but phenomenal, especially if you happen to be a fan of the boss!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (Wednesday 14 August)

Tarantino’s latest movie sees a struggling actor (DiCaprio) and his stunt man (Pitt) get caught up in the middle of the Manson Family murders. An insanely stacked cast, including Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, and Kurt Russell, against the backdrop of 1969 Hollywood.

DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD (Friday 16 August)

We all know the cartoon, but this isn’t your niece’s Dora The Explorer! Oh no, this is the live-action take, as Dora goes full Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in an attempt to save her kidnapped parents, and maybe, if she has time, the whole world! We’re not gonna lie, this looks like a lot of fun to us…

ANGEL HAS FALLEN (Wednesday 21 August)

The third in the Has Fallen franchise, after Olympus (The White House) and London (eh… London) were saved by Gerard Butler’s growling fists. This time he finds himself being framed for an assassination attempt on the president and is forced to go on the run and clear his name. Explosions will happen.

CRAWL (Friday 23 August)

A daughter and her father are trapped in a slowly flooding house in Florida after their town is hit by a massive hurricane… but there are also alligators in the mix. A bonkers thriller from the director of The Hills Have Eyes and Piranha 3D, this is exactly the kind of movie they don’t make enough of anymore!

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK (Friday 23 August)

Guillermo Del Toto oversees this series of horror stories that terrorise a group of teenagers who read from the wrong book. In order to save their hometown and everyone they love, they are forced to individually face their worst fears, and if you see what the trailer has in store, then they’ll quickly become your worst fears too…
