Here are the 5 best movies on the telly tonight

Rory Cashin

A quiet night on the couch is exactly what we all need today.

We’ve had a very busy couple of weekends, haven’t we?

The Pope. Electric Picnic. Remember all that good weather? So many reasons to just not be on the couch on a Friday evening.

But this Friday? Nothing doing! Well, there are a lot of new movies to check out in the cinema, including The Nun, Black 47, and American Animals, and we reviewed them all in the latest episode of The Big Reviewski, which you can listen to right here:

If none (or Nun of that? Movie title joke, nailed it.) interests you, then here are the best movies on the telly tonight:

FRIDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

The Two Faces Of January – Film 4 – 6.55pm

The writer of Drive gets behind the camera for this tale of a con artist (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife (Kirsten Dunst) who are wanted for murder, and must trust a potentially dangerous stranger (Oscar Isaac) to help smuggle them out of the country.

The Fast And The Furious – ITV2 – 9.00pm

Considering the later movies involved nuclear submarines, sentient cars, and exploding skyscraper chases, it is quaint to go back and watch the original, which was about stealing DVD players and underground street racing.

True Romance – Dave – 9.40pm

Written by Tarantino, directed by the late great Tony Scott, with Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette on the run with a bag of cocaine and wanted for murder. Also features Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper, all giving some career best performances.

Gone Girl – Film 4 – 11.05pm

David Fincher’s brilliant adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s hugely successful novel about a couple who discover not only do they not love each other anymore, but one of them might actually be a bit of a sociopath, is one of the most darkly funny films of recent years. Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike are both brilliant in their roles.

Spring Breakers – Film 4- 1.05am

Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine play four teenagers who rob a diner to get money up so they can go on spring break. They’re soon arrested, and then bailed out by James Franco (playing a gun-toting pimp called Alien), and they decide to join him for a life of crime.
