Here are the best movies on TV this evening

Stephen Porzio

It’s Thursday.

Congratulations, you’ve nearly made it to the end of the week. And while the weather may be awful, there’s plenty of great cinema worth checking out tonight on television.

Here are our picks of the best movies on offer this evening.

The Blues Brothers – ITV 4 – 9pm

In this cult musical action-comedy, a man just released from prison (John Belushi) puts together his old band to save the Catholic home where he and his brother (Dan Aykroyd) were raised.

Famously, the movie once held the record for most cars destroyed during filming – 103.

Contagion – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Steven Soderbergh’s starry and prescient pandemic thriller is either the worst film to watch given current circumstances or the best.

Taken 3 – Film Four – 9pm

Taken 3 is the second sequel to a movie that didn’t really need one in the first place.

That said, Liam Neeson does his thing. Forest Whitaker is fun to watch. There are worse movies.

The Devil’s Candy – The Horror Channel – 9pm

In this creepy cult horror flick, a struggling painter and heavy metal enthusiast is possessed by dark forces after he and his young family move into their dream home in rural Texas.

Paris, Texas – Film Four – 11.15pm

Speaking of Texas, this road movie from arthouse darling Wim Wenders centres on an aimless drifter (Harry Dean Stanton) who has been missing for four years.

It follows him as he wanders out of the desert and reconnects with society, himself, his life, and his family.

Seven – Turner Classic Movies – 11.20pm

Directed by David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play detectives hunting down a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as a motif in his murders.

Alongside The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is one of the darkest thrillers ever put out by Hollywood and boasts an unforgettable ending.

Jaws – ITV 4 – 11.45pm

Steven Spielberg’s breakthrough film, this aquatic thriller still feels as fresh and terrifying as when it premiered over 45 years ago.
