Here are the best movies on TV this evening

Stephen Porzio

Thursday night viewing.

Sad there’s still one more day until the weekend? Why not let one of these fine movies airing on TV tonight take your blues away.

Below JOE has selected this evening’s best options.

Inception – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Arguably the best sci-fi film since The Matrix, this Christopher Nolan flick centres on a team of thieves (led by Leonardo DiCaprio) who steal corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology. The group is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO (Ireland’s own Cillian Murphy).

Nolan manages to make the complicated exposition of Inception’s first half feel fun and seamless. That is before an incredible, action-packed second half, as well as an enigmatic, unforgettable final shot.

Masked and Anonymous – BBC Four – 9pm

Fans of the recently turned 80-year-old Bob Dylan will probably want to check out this oddity. Co-written by and starring the singer, he plays a rock legend who is bailed out of prison to perform a one-man benefit concert for a decaying future North American society.

The stacked supporting cast includes Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, Penelope Cruz and a whole host of famous cameos.

Jaws 2 – ITV 4 – 9pm

Roy Scheider returns as Police Chief Martin Brody in this sequel to Steven Spielberg’s legendary aquatic thriller.

Red Sparrow – Film Four – 9pm

Jennifer Lawrence plays a ballerina turned Russian intelligence officer who is sent to make contact with a CIA officer in the hope of discovering the identity of a mole.

Red Sparrow’s performances, spy intrigue and sense of style just about make up for its bloated run time and grim tone.

The Void – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

This cool and creepy horror follows a small group of people who become trapped in a hospital by a gathering of hooded cultists and grotesque creatures.

Fans of 80’s horror or anything inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft will want to check this out.

Airplane! – ITV 4 – 11.25pm

Easily one of the best comedies ever made, this spoof of disaster films features some of the silliest but most funny gags and one-liners ever.

“Surely you can’t be serious!” “I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.”

Last Action Hero – Film Four – 11.45pm

Directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and with a script from Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), this fun and playful fantasy action-comedy sees a young movie fan transported into the fictional world of his favorite action movie character (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

A box-office bomb upon its release in 1993, Last Action Hero is ready to be rediscovered.
