Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx star…
At last, the weekend is here and for those staying in this Friday night, there’s plenty of movies to watch on the box.
JOE’s cinema guru Rory Cashin already compiled a list of the best horror flicks airing on TV this weekend to mark Halloween, which you can read here.
However, for scaredy cats or those just looking for something different, here are some other options.
White House Down – Virgin Media One – 9pm
While on a tour of the White House with his young daughter, a Capitol policeman (Channing Tatum) springs into action to save his child and protect the president (Jamie Foxx) from a heavily armed group of paramilitary invaders.
Notably released the same year as other White House-set action flick Olympus Has Fallen, for our money White House Down is the better of the two.
This is thanks to the effortless charisma of its stars and a lighter tone. There’s also its director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) who brings his trademark flair for blockbuster spectacle to proceedings.
V for Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm
This impressive graphic novel adaptation stars Natalie Portman and a masked Hugo Weaving as people living in an alternative future where a fascist totalitarian regime dominates the UK.
Ghostbusters – E4 – 9pm
Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy lead the cast of this 2016 reboot of the classic supernatural comedy.
The Big Country – TG4 – 9.05pm
Gregory Peck stars in this epic western from the director of Ben-Hur.
Bad Boys – W – 10pm
Whatcha gonna do?
The Day the Earth Stood Still – Channel 4 – 11.40pm
This sci-fi remake sees Keanu Reeves play an alien who comes to Earth.
Contagion – Turner Classic Movies – 11.45pm
As we outlined here, this star-studded thriller from Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven) essentially predicted Covid-19.
