It could only be Captain Planet, of course, which will be familiar to any Irish child who spent time watching television on weekday afternoons during the early to mid ‘90s.

In an era where the number of channels available in Irish households extended to a maximum of about six, Captain Planet was one of a sheer treasure trove of cartoons on the box, alongside gems such as Animaniacs, James Bond Junior, Biker Mice from Mars and much, much more.

All of which, we must add, especially Captain Planet, came with absolutely belting theme tunes.

The good news for the many, many fans of the show is that, according to Mashable, it will soon be available online through digital retailers including iTunes, Amazon Video, Google Play, Vudu, Playstation Store, and Xbox Store.

Every episode from the show’s six seasons will be available (at a cost of $1.99 per episode and $9.99 and $14.99 per season), including a number of episodes that, surprisingly for a cartoon, tackled some pretty serious subjects.

From an Irish perspective, for example, the episode ‘If It’s Doomsday, This Must Be Belfast’ has gone down in infamy for its depiction of the troubles and the relationship between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.

That (and a few more notable exceptions) aside, however, it’s still a cartoon that will be remembered with plenty of nostalgia by a certain generation, many of whom will no doubt be seeking a nostalgic trip down memory lane when the episodes become available on April 10.
