Yes, you read that correctly.
Remember reading about the Great Famine in school? It was between 1845 and 1852? One million people died? 1.5 million people emigrated? Yes? Yes.
Remember how funny all of that was? No, we don’t either but Channel 4 have sanctioned a sitcom about the famine and it’s set to be a comedy. A comedy.
Speaking to the Irish Times, screenwriter Hugh Travers revealed that he is writing Hungry which will be like “Shameless in famine Ireland.”
Travers, who earned an open commission from Channel 4, which allows him to write any idea he wants, added;
“Well, they say ‘comedy equals tragedy plus time’. I don’t want to do anything that denies the suffering that people went through, but Ireland has always been good at black humour.”
There’s been a pretty furious reaction and a petition to stop the airing of the show has been started.
We’re pretty speechless, what do you think?
