ET and Back to the Future amongst most popular 80s movies amongst over 30s in Ireland

Ah, memories

Conor Heneghan

Nothing like a bit of nostalgia to make you feel old.

There’s nothing worse for people over 30 to be reminded of how old they are and the fact that Back to the Future turns 30 this year is sure to do just that.

Three decades ago? Seriously?

Apart from making some of us feel old, Back to the Future does resurrect fond memories of the 1980s as a decade, which was the subject of a recent survey commissioned by health insurer GloHealth titled #Bornbefore1985.

Over 700 Irish people were surveyed about their memories of the decade and the results that emerged were pretty interesting.

28 per cent of people, for instance, said that ET was their favourite movie, followed by Dirty Dancing (23%) and the aforementioned Back to the Future (22%), while there was also special mentions for timeless classics like The Karate Kid (13%) and The Never-Ending Story (12%).

Elsewhere, 30 per cent of those surveyed said that Johnny Logan’s double Eurovision success was the most memorable event of the decade, suprisingly proving more popular than Ray Houghton’s goal against England in Stuttgart and the release of Michael Jackson’s iconic album Thriller (both 23%).

As far as the tellybox was concerned, people most fondly remembered Dempsey’s Den (37%) ahead of the likes of Bosco (31%) and The Wanderly Wagon (20%). There really wasn’t much on the box in the ’80s was there

Thinking back on elements of popular culture like the ones listed above, maybe the ’80s wasn’t such a bad decade after all?

Now let us never speak of it again.
