A Big Lebowski themed festival with an Irish twist is coming to Cork…
The cleverly named “Feis Lebowski” is a celebration of the Coen Brothers’ cult classic and takes place at the Beggarman Bar on Gillabbey Street, near UCC on July 26th.
On the night you can expect screenings of the movie, along with a Nintendo Wii Bowling Tournament, a Lebowski themed fancy dress competition, DJs playing music from the movie (but definitely not playing the Dude’s least favourite band, the Eagles) and of course White Russians, the Dude’s favourite drink will be served on the night.
Corkman Ruairi O’Hagan is the man behind Feis Lebowski, and explains why he’s doing it.
“I’ve been a massive fan of The Big Lebowski since I was in college, and I watch it at least once a month I’d say. My wife is absolutely fed up of it at this point! I love the idea of Lebowski Fest in the states and said to myself I’d love to see that in Ireland. So eventually I said I’d try and do something similar myself!”
The Beggarman Bar has become a big hit in the Cork arts community after it installed a 35 seat cinema upstairs in its former snooker room, and Ruairi says it was a perfect fit for Feis Lebowski.
The night is all for a good cause too. All the proceeds will go to the Alisha Savage Fund, which raises money for a young Cork girl with a very rare form of cancer.
“Alisha is a little three year old from Cork who has AT/RT, a very rare form of brain cancer. She’s receiving treatment for it at the Dana Farber Centre in Boston, who are the world leaders in treating AT/RT. So every cent we raise on the night will be going to Alisha’s family to contribute to her care.”
