A legendary Western movie is airing on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Friday, 4 October) is Hang ‘Em High, the 1968 revisionist Western starring Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood.

The film sees Eastwood play Jed Cooper, a man falsely accused of a cattle rustling crime by a gang of men who unsuccessfully attempt to lynch him as punishment.

Saved by marshal Dave Bliss (Ben Johnson) and judge Adam Fenton (Pat Hingle), the lawmen offer Cooper a job as a federal marshal with the caveat that he not abuse his new power to seek revenge against his tormentors.

“But, when Cooper finds that some of the men who attacked him are involved in another set of crimes, he fights to bring them to justice,” the plot synopsis reads.

Hang ‘Em High is a part of cinema history for marking Eastwood’s first starring role in a Hollywood movie following his iconic Dollars trilogy of spaghetti Westerns from Italy.

Praised for its dark story, its thoughtful exploration of frontier justice and Eastwood’s classic lead turn, Hang ‘Em High holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The film is airing on TV tonight on TG4 at 9.35pm. It is also available to rent on Apple TV and the Sky Store.
