That final scene left a lot of questions.
We’re going to assume that you’re totally up to date on all things related to The Haunting of Hill House but on the of chance that you haven’t seen/finished Mike Flanagan’s wonderful series on Netflix, consider this to be your spoiler alert.

With news that Season 2 – or an anthology series that will feature some of the Crain characters appearing – is set to be given the go-ahead, fans of Netflix’s horror series have been left in a bit of limbo about future episodes.
There’s a very credible theory that the Crain children never actually left the Red Room as the scene when they were all gathered around to celebrate Luke’s sobriety actually had plenty of similarities that played out in the Red Room – the same camera angle, colour palette, aesthetic style, etc.
Basically, the theory states that the Crain children are still trapped in the Red Room.
Well, in an interview with TVLine, Flanagan has given a definitive answer to the burning question; are the Crain kids still being kept against their will in Hill House’s most sinister location?
“I’ve said a lot about the ending, and I’m reluctant to say more. I like that people are able to put their own spin on things, so I’m not eager to take that away from them. In this case, though, the ending can be read at face value,” he said.
The talented director was pretty definitive in his statement, later adding, “if they’re still in the Red Room, it robs Hugh’s sacrifice [and the show itself] of any meaning. For me, it ends exactly as it appears to.”
“Hugh is dead, Nell is dead, Olivia is still dead. I always looked at it as just having a hint of peace, just a glimpse into the fact that life goes on, and there’s some acceptance for the surviving characters. Acceptance, peace and a little forgiveness doesn’t lessen the loss they experience in that episode; it only shows that life has a way of going on, and that these characters are finally accepting of that,” Flanagan concluded.
Despite the fact that this particular mystery is now solved, we’re still very interested in returning to Hill House because as we learned in the show, not even fire can stop the terrifying spectre of the Bent-Neck Lady or The Tall Man.
