Idris Elba and Adam Sandler will star in the first batch of Netflix original movies

Netflix have been responsible for some of the best television of recent years with the likes of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black and now they’re hoping to bring that influence to bear on the movie business.

Netflix have announced release dates for a series of original films that customers will be able to stream via their existing Netflix service, beginning with Beasts of No Nation on October 16 of this year.

Directed by True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga and starring the great Idris Elba, the war movie is based on a 2005 novel of the same name and will be released in selected cinemas on the same day it goes live on Netflix.

The Ridiculous Six, the first of a number of Adam Sandler movies that will go out on Netflix, will go on release on December 11, followed by the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Legend in the first quarter of next year.

Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a project that Judd Apatow is involved in, meanwhile, is due in March 2016.
