An incredibly entertaining caper is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Tom Cruise stars in the crime-comedy that’s loosely based on a true story.

Feeling like you’ve watched everything on Netflix? Not to worry, as JOE has compiled this list of the best movies airing on TV this evening.

Here’s what’s on.

American Made – Film Four – 9pm

In our pick for tonight, Tom Cruise plays an ordinary pilot recruited in the 70s to fly missions for the CIA (represented by a shady Domhnall Gleeson) before eventually becoming a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel.

Reteaming Cruise with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, the pair somehow manage to take a very complicated story, loosely based on real events, and present it in a way that’s not just understandable to the viewer, but feels incredibly breezy, fun and thrilling.

For a Few Dollars More – ITV 4 – 9pm

The second entry in the iconic Clint Eastwood starring Dollars Trilogy.

Swordfish – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Hugh Jackman stars in this early 2000s action-thriller as an ex-con targeted for recruitment into a bank robbery conspiracy because of his formidable hacking skills.

Resident Evil: Retribution – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

The fifth Milla Jovovich starring Resident Evil adaptation.

Miami Vice – Turner Classic Movies – 11.10pm

Writer-director Michael Mann helms this supremely underrated cinematic reboot of the 80’s TV show he executive produced starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.

Journey’s End – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham and Toby Jones feature amongst the cast of this well-reviewed WWI drama.

Mary Magdalene – Film Four – 11.15pm

Real-life couple Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara play Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene.

Bullitt – ITV 4 – 11.45pm

Steve McQueen stars in this late 60s neo-noir that boasts one of the best car chases ever put onscreen.

Piercing – Horror Channel – 12.45am

If you’re still up, Christopher Abbott and Mia Wasikowska star in this hyper-stylised, darkly comic horror-thriller about a serial killer who plans to kill an unsuspecting prostitute.

However, there’s more to her than meets the eye.
