One of the best serial killer thrillers is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

A very eclectic mix of flicks for you to choose from this evening!

If you haven’t checked it out yet, 2022’s best reviewed movie is finally available to watch at home. But if you’re still looking for some other movie to check out on your Monday evening, here are the ones you can check out on your telly…

Flight – FilmFour – 9pm

The first of two Denzel Washington movies this evening. In this one, he plays a commercial flight captain with a drinking problem, but manages to save the lives of most of his crew and passengers during a potentially fatal mechanical issue on his plane. But in the investigation following the crash landing, a spotlight is put on his personal life.

2012 – RTÉ2 – 9pm

The director of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow goes all out with this apocalyptic disaster movie, with the entire surface of the Earth impacted. John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandiwe Newton, Danny Glover and loads more run away from big set pieces. Its dumb but fun.

The Expendables – Sky Showcase – 9pm

With the fourth of these due in cinemas any day now, the first of the aging action star megamixes remains the best so far.

End of Watch – TG4 – 9.30pm

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star in this tense and violent thriller about two LAPD officers who are targeted by local criminals when they arrest a number of people from the same gang.

The Other Guys – ITV4 – 10pm

“I’m a peacock, Captain! You gotta let me fly!”

Manhunter – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Our pick for the night is Manhunter, a truly outstanding serial killer thriller, and the first on-screen appearance of Doctor Hannibal Lector. Here he is played by Succession’s own Brian Cox, and the movie is directed with chilly precision by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral). More recently remade as Red Dragon (with Anthony Hopkins and Edward Norton), the plot remains the same, with Lector providing assistance to FBI agent Will Graham (William Petersen) in tracking down dangerous serial killer known as The Tooth Fairy (Tom Noonan).

Manhunter is not currently available on any streaming or PVOD services in Ireland or the UK, so if you’ve never seen it, tonight is your night to check it out (or to record it so you watch it at your own convenience in the not too distant future).

Fences – FilmFour – 11.45pm

The second part of tonight’s Denzel Washington double bill is this powerful drama, with Washington also pulling double duty as the director. He plays a former baseball player who lost out his chance at stardom due to racism, and so now takes out his frustrations on his wife (Viola Davis).

The Fits – FilmFour – 2.30am

We’ve never heard of this movie before, but it has 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, so it could be amazing. The synopsis tells us it is about an 11-year-old girl who tries to work her way into a tightly knit dance team.
