One of the most devastating horror films ever made is among the movies on TV tonight

Simon Kelly

Your jaw will be on the floor.

We’re halfway through the week and there’s no better way to celebrate that than watching one of the great movies on TV this evening.

Luckily, there are some fine choices, but our pick of the bunch is one of the most devastating movies ever made – The Mist.

Based on the novella by horror master Stephen King, The Mist is directed by the legendary Frank Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) one of his last big movie entries.

The 2007 horror stars Thomas Jane as a resident of a small coastal town that gets covered in a mysterious mist.

Things start to go south very quickly when monstrous creatures start appearing from the fog, forcing the community to lock themselves inside a local supermarket.

Jane is supported by an ensemble cast including some familiar faces like Toby Jones (the Harry Potter films), the late Andre Braugher (Brooklyn 99) and Laurie Holden (The Walking Dead) and the breakdown of societal norms between the characters within the enclosed space of the supermarket makes for tense viewing.

Perhaps the most notable takeaway from The Mist is its simply devastating finale that will have your jaw on the floor as the credits begin to roll – but we won’t say much else on that to avoid spoilers.

While The Mist is outwardly a traditional horror (there are scary monsters and plenty of gore), the most frightening aspect of the movie is the people involved and what they will do in extreme circumstances – it is truly in the spirit of what Stephen King does best.

You can check out The Mist on Film Four at 11.25 pm.
