Dave Hanratty

The first weekend of 2019.

We made it.

It’s that time again where we preview the very best (and occasionally so bad or flawed that they’re fascinating) of the movies that hit your TV screen tonight.

On this Friday 4 January, your options look like this:

Mad Max – TCM – 9pm

The original. The best?

The Running Man – SyFy – 9pm

Don’t leave enough room for Arnie’s fist, because he’ll ram it into your stomach and break your goddamned spine.

The Hunger Games – Film 4 – 9pm

Jennifer Lawrence gets her Battle Royale on.

The Wolf of Wall Street – More 4 – 9pm

Leonardo DiCaprio does drugs.

Titanic – TG4 – 9.05pm

Leonardo DiCaprio probably wishes he did drugs.

Creed – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Rocky Balboa’s legacy lives on in the form of Adonis Creed, with Michael B. Jordan packing a seriously powerful punch.

The Usual Suspects – ITV4 – 10.50pm

Give me the keys, you f-

The Counsellor – Channel 4 – 11pm

Ridley Scott directs a stunning cast – Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Édgar Ramirez – into a corner thanks to an incredibly overwritten and pretentious script.

Worth watching just to see how much of a train wreck it is.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Film 4 – 11.50pm

Jennifer Lawrence returns for more murderous dystopian action.

The Judge – RTÉ 2 – 12.25am

Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall tug the heartstrings in a decent ‘watch with your dad’ drama.
