A new month. A bunch of movies.
Well, it’s November.
That means no more scary movies – in theory, anyway – and a pivot to more festive fare. Seriously, Christmas FM is back on the air. There’s no waiting around.
Let’s see if the TV schedules are also playing along.
Here’s the best movies around on the box on Monday, 1 November…
Gods of Egypt – Film4 – 6.35pm
One for the ‘so bad it’s good’ folder.
V for Vendetta – Turner Classic Movies / TCM – 9pm
Our main pick this evening.
Rumours abound that the Wachowskis ghost-directed this project and there’s definitely some Matrix DNA in here including the presence of Hugo Weaving – albeit, behind a mask.
If you’re unfamiliar, this is the story of V; a Guy Fawkes-inspired vigilante who aims to bring down a totalitarian regime in dystopian London while also exacting a campaign of personal revenge.
Natalie Portman finds herself caught up in the action. A flawed film, certainly, but hugely ambitious, quite entertaining and oddly emotional at times.
Happy Gilmore – ITV4 – 9pm
Madcap golf hijinks courtesy of Adam Sandler.
Fighting With My Family – Film4 – 9pm
Before she was en route to MCU superstardom, Florence Pugh charmed audiences in this biography of WWE wrestler Paige.
Lena Heady, Nick Frost, Jack Lowden, Vince Vaughn and The Rock lend support.
Halloween – TG4 – 9.30pm
Okay, I guess we are still doing scary movies.
This is the 2018 reboot, which is super-violent and fairly generic but you could do worse, I guess.
Executive Decision – ITV4 – 11pm
Kurt Russell battles bad guys at 35,000 feet.
Baywatch – Film4 – 11.15pm
The Rock and Zac Efron edition.
Marnie – TCM – 11.45pm
Vintage psychological thriller from Alfred Hitchcock in which a liar and a thief marries a woman only to find out that she may be hiding even more than he is.
Sean Connery and Tippi Hedren star.
