A new week kicks off.
Ladies and gentlemen… the weekend. Is over, sadly.
It’s all about movies now.
Here are your ‘on the box’ options on Monday, 20 September…
The Devil Wears Prada – Film4 – 6.45pm
Anne Hathaway lands her dream job only for Meryl Streep’s nightmare editor to cause havoc in a film in which just about every character is a deeply selfish individual. Emily Blunt is innocent, maybe.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – Film4 – 9pm
Ethan Hunt goes rogue, for a change. This is the one where Rebecca Ferguson shows up and there’s a killer opera house sequence early on. Probably the second best in the series after Fallout.
Captain Phillips – ITV4 – 9pm
In our pick for tonight, Tom Hanks delivers an excellent performance – one that wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar, which feels bizarre given he usually gets one of those by default – as a real-life merchant mariner taken hostage by Somali pirates.
Barkhad Abdi, a talented actor that Hollywood has had no idea what to do with since, compellingly holds his own opposite Hanks as the tension ratchets up.
Honestly worth watching just for the final scene involving Hanks. Seriously, how was he not nominated?!
Unknown – TG4 – 9.30pm
Liam Neeson, firmly embracing his post-Taken action career, wakes up from a coma only to find that his life has been stolen. And he’s not having that, no sir.
Platoon – ITV4 – 11.40pm
Speaking of actors snubbed or robbed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the fact that Willem Dafoe didn’t pick up an Oscar for his turn in Oliver Stone’s grim Vietnam epic is nothing short of criminal.
xXx: The Return of Xander Cage – Film4 – 11.40pm
After years of just about every single person on the planet screaming and begging for it, Vin Diesel finally drags audiences back to the Xander Zone. I think Neymar is involved, too?
