One of the best films of the ’90s is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It remains timely nearly 30 years after its release.

Need a movie this Monday evening. Well, one of the coolest horrors of recent years and one of the best hidden gems of the decade are now available to watch at home.

For more options, however, here are what movies are on the telly tonight.

John Wick – Sky Showcase – 9pm

With the excellent John Wick: Chapter 4 in cinemas now, what better time to catch up on the original in the game-changing action franchise?

Unstoppable – ITV4 – 9pm

Another great action thriller, except this time based on a real-life incident, Unstoppable revolves around a runaway freight train carrying toxic material and the two men (Chris Pine, Denzel Washington) who attempt to stop it from barreling toward a city.

The Predator – Film4 – 9pm

The messy if somewhat entertaining fourth entry in the legendary action-horror franchise.

Honeymoon – Horror Xtra – 9pm

In this very creepy horror, a secluded forest vacation for a newlywed couple (Harry Treadaway and Rose Leslie) takes a dark turn.

Reasonable Doubt – Legend – 9pm

In this average crime thriller, the life of a District Attorney (Dominic Cooper) spirals out of control when he is involved in a fatal hit and run and another man (Samuel L. Jackson) is arrested for his crime.

Hell Ride – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

This outlaw biker film executive produced by Quentin Tarantino has a score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes – meaning you should probably avoid it.

la haine

Our pick for tonight is 1995’s La Haine

The Post – TG4 – 9.30pm

A late-period effort from legendary director Steven Spielberg, this pacy historical political thriller depicts the attempts by The Washington Post’s journalists in 1971 to publish the infamous Pentagon Papers, a set of classified documents regarding the US Government’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks star.

Ransom – Turner Classic Movies – 10.50pm

This terrifically tense 90’s thriller, follows a multi-millionaire (Mel Gibson) whose son is kidnapped. After initially agreeing to pay the ransom, the dad then decides to use the money as a bounty on the perpetrators of the crime.

The Exorcist III – Legend – 10.50pm

A movie we’ve recommended a number of times before, this horror sequel follows Lieutenant William F. Kinderman (here played by George C. Scott) as he investigates a series of gruesome murders. However, it turns out the crimes are linked to the demon Pazazu from the original Exorcist.

Stake Land – Horror Xtra – 10.50pm

This solid indie horror takes place in a world of vampires and follows an expert vampire hunter and his young protégé as they travel toward sanctuary.

Find Me Guilty – AMC – 11.05pm

Vin Diesel’s lead turn as a New Jersey mobster in this courtroom comedy-drama from legendary director Sidney Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon, Network, Serpico) earned him some acclaim from critics.

La Haine – Film4 – 11.10pm

Last but not least is our pick for tonight – this 1995 French crime drama following three friends (Hubert Koundé, Said Taghmaoui and Vincent Cassel), each from immigrant families, in a suburb outside of Paris over 24 hours.

This is as they try to come to grips with their anger after another friend of theirs is beaten and left in intensive care by police.

Stylish, vibrant, incredibly acted and still as timely as it was upon release, La Haine (‘hatred’ in English) has gone on to be considered one of the best movies of the ’90s and holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
