Movies & TV

22nd Dec 2018

Here are the 16 best movies on TV this Saturday

Dave Hanratty

That’s right, 16 of ’em. You’re spoiled.

Can you feel it?

That sense of something in the air?

Christmas. It’s called Christmas, guys.

You’ve said your awkward goodbyes in work (did you opt for a handshake, high five or hug, though?) and it’s time to dive into a world of doing feck-all for the next couple of weeks.

With that in mind, there are plenty of options on the television tonight – Saturday 22 December – when it comes to movies.

Let’s do this.

Mamma Mia – ITV Be – 6.50pm

Any ABBA fans in the house?

Uncle Buck – ITV2 – 7.05pm

John Candy in a comedy classic.

Airplane! – Universal TV – 7.30pm

Leslie Nielsen in another comedy classic.

Iron Man – ITV 2 – 9pm

Robert Downey Jr. kicks the Marvel Cinematic Universe into overdrive.

That bit where Terrence Howard looks at the War Machine suit and says, “Next time, baby!” sure aged awkwardly, didn’t it?

The Witches of Eastwick – SyFy – 9pm

Jack Nicholson with a truly devilish performance.

Hitman: Agent 47 – Film 4 – 9pm

Because horrendously awful movies have charm, too.

The Hitman video games are some of the best around. The movies? Not so much.

Swordfish – TCM – 9pm

Speaking of bad movies, this one is worth flicking over to just to check out the hairstyles on John Travolta’s super-terrorist and Hugh Jackman’s computer hacker whizz.

Kingpin – Universal TV – 9.30pm

Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray battle it out on the bowling lanes in one of the better Farrelly Brothers laugh riots.

Die Hard 2 – RTÉ 2 – 9.35pm

Bruce Willis causes chaos in an airport at Christmas without resorting to the use of drones.

The Guard – RTÉ One – 10.40pm

Brendan Gleeson is a loveable lawman in John Michael McDonagh’s dark farce.

Hell or High Water – Film 4 – 10.50pm

Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges bring their A-game in this superb modern western. Take the punt if you’ve never heard of it before.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day – ITV4 – 11.05pm

One of the very best action and/or science fiction films ever made.

East is East – Channel 4 – 11.10pm

Smart, socially conscious late 90s comedy-drama featuring Jimi ‘ended up in Eastenders’ Mistry.

Jaws – ITV – 11.30pm

Shark ruins everyone’s good time.

Garage – RTÉ One – 12.30am

Pat Shortt displays serious dramatic chops in a tough Irish indie effort.

Slow West – Film 4 – 12.55am

If you’re still feeling the western vibe after Hell or High Water, you could do a lot worse than Michael Fassbender and the great Ben Mendelsohn saddling up.
