Movies & TV

26th Feb 2022

A mind-bending modern classic is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s from filmmaker Christopher Nolan of Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy and Tenet fame.

Alas, it is Saturday – typically a day to relax after the pressures of the week.

It also tends to be a good one in terms of movies on telly offerings.

This Saturday is no exception, boasting a particularly packed line-up.

Here are your options.

Knives Out – Channel 4 – 9pm

This fun mystery sees a detective (Daniel Craig, doing a terrific Southern accent) investigate the death of a wealthy patriarch (Christopher Plummer) of an eccentric, combative family.

A star-studded cast play the suspects, including Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Toni Collette.

Kill Bill: Vol 1 – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

The Escapist – Film4 – 9pm

In this gritty and intense prison drama-thriller, a prisoner 14 years into a life sentence (Succession’s Brian Cox) hatches a plan to escape upon receiving upsetting news about his daughter.

The Outlaw Josey Wales/A Fistful of Dollars – ITV 4 – 9pm/11.50pm

You can have a Clint Eastwood western double bill on the channel tonight.

Hud – True Movies – 9pm

Another classic western, this time starring Paul Newman.

Director Ron Howard and leading man Tom Hanks reteam to adapt Dan Brown’s smash hit mystery thriller novel.

Blinded by the Light – BBC Two – 10pm

This heart-warming comedy-drama tells the coming-of-age story of a British-Pakistani Muslim teenager (Viveik Kalra) in ’80s Britain whose life is changed forever after he discovers the music of Bruce Springsteen.

Tremors – Horror Channel – 10.35pm

This sequel to comedy Meet the Parents adds Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman to the mix.

Joy Ride – Film4 – 11.05pm

The Lost Boys – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach, all the damn vampires.”

Commando – Channel 4 – 11.35pm

This ’80s action flick with starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is incredibly cheesy and all the better for it, honestly.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day – TG4 – 11.45pm

Amy Adams and Frances McDormand star in this rom-com set in pre-WWII London.

The Lost City of Z – BBC Two – 11.50pm

This epic adventure drama from the great writer-director James Gray (Ad Astra, We Own the Night) tells the true story British explorer Percy Fawcett (Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam) who made several attempts to find a supposed ancient lost city in the Amazon.

The supporting cast includes Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller and Tom Holland.

Memento – BBC One – 11.55pm

Our pick for this evening is a neo-noir that follows a man with short-term memory loss (Guy Pearce) as he attempts to track down his wife’s murderer.

Renowned for its inventive narrative structure, in which much of the story is told in reverse to mirror the mental state of the lead character, this 2000 movie was a great calling card for its writer-director Christopher Nolan – who would go on to make the Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and most recently Tenet.

Memento also boasts terrific supporting performances from Matrix alums Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano.

Detroit – RTÉ2 – 12.05am

Filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Theory) directs this tense and timely drama about one of the largest race riots in US history.

John Boyega of Star Wars fame leads the ensemble cast.

Pineapple Express – Comedy Central Extra – 12.15am

In this hit stoner comedy, a lazy court-process clerk (Seth Rogen) winds up on the run from hitmen with his marijuana dealer (James Franco) after witnessing a murder.

The Dig – RTÉ One – 12.25am

Last but not least, this gripping Irish drama with Western elements sees a man named Ronan (Moe Dunford) return home after serving 15 years for murder only to find the victim’s father (Lorcan Cranitch) searching for the body in a nearby bog.

Unsure if he actually committed the crime, Ronan agrees to help the dad dig.
