One of the best films of the decade is among the movies on TV tonight

Your Thursday evening movie menu has arrived!

Loads of big movies to choose from on your Thursday evening, kicking off with…

Close Encounters of the Third Kind – FilmFour – 6.15pm

Spielberg’s classic sci-fi about ordinary people finding themselves drawn to the first interaction with extraterrestrial life.

The Young Victoria – BBC Three – 7.25pm

Emily Blunt plays the young princess who goes on to become Queen Victoria, and her romance with Prince Albert, here played by Rupert Friend. A decent period romantic drama.

Maid In Manhattan – RTÉ2 – 9pm

A romantic comedy that fails in both the romance and the comedy, with Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes trying to make sparks fly.

Braveheart – BBC Four – 9pm

Famous Australian Mel Gibson stars in, directs and produces this war epic about one of Scotland’s most famous men.

Another Round – FilmFour – 9pm

Our main pick for tonight is Another Round, winner of the Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Academy Awards. The movie tells the story of a group of teachers in Denmark (headed by the always watchable Mads Mikkelsen) who embark on a social experiment which involves them… well… being a little bit drunk pretty much all of the time. Another Round left such an impression on Leonardo DiCaprio that he is producing and starring in the American remake.

Another Round is also available to rent on Google Play, Rakuten TV and Apple TV.

Creed II – ITV4 – 10pm

Sly Stallone and Michael B. Jordan both return for this very good sports sequel. Check out our interview with the movie’s antagonists Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu right here:

The Accountant – BBC One – 11.10pm

Ben Affleck stars in this thriller about this part-time accountant, part-time assassin. Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons and John Lithgow fill out the impressive supporting cast.

Dune – FilmFour – 11.20pm

Not the 2021 version, but the 1984 adaptation, directed by David Lynch, starring Sting!

His House – BBC Two – 11.45pm

A horror movie with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% is not to be passed up. A couple escape from war-torn Sudan, seeking a fresh start in England, only to discover a lurking evil in their new home.

The Purge: Election Year – ITV4 – 12.35am

The third entry in the Purge series is actually pretty decent… as least as far as Purge movies go.

White Boy Rick – Channel 4 – 2am

Matthew McConaughey stars in this true-life thriller about the youngest ever FBI informant. It should have been a lot better than this.
