Movies & TV

09th Aug 2023

One of the decade’s best hidden gems is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Some really great movies to choose from on the telly this evening.

There is A LOT of stuff to choose from this evening, including Netflix re-adding one of the best thrillers of recent years (more on that here), and Prime Video adding 17 big movies to its library (full list here), including one of 2023’s very best movies (more on that here).

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – ITV2 – 6.35pm

The last one. It is a really good ending for this series.

The Golden Child – FilmFour – 7.10pm

Arguably Eddie Murphy’s weirdest movie, in which he is hired to protect a kidnapped child connected to some mysterious events.

Casino Royale – ITV4 – 8pm

Daniel Craig’s first outing as 007, and probably his best. Either this or Skyfall. Discuss.

Ready Player One – BBC Three – 9pm

Spielberg dives into the future and the past with this big budget blockbuster set within a virtual reality world obsessed with retro 80s movies, shows, games and music.

Predator – FilmFour – 9pm

The action film that eventually becomes a horror film. One of Arnie’s best.

c'mon c'mon

Joaquin Phoenix stars in C’mon C’mon, our main pick for the night

Train To Busan – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

We very nearly went with this brilliant zombie horror as our pick of the night. Passengers on board a train discover that the world outside has been overrun with a cannibalistic apocalypse.

Downton Abbey – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

The big screen sequel to the hit TV show. You either already love the show and hence will love this movie, or you don’t and you won’t.

C’mon C’mon – FilmFour – 11.10pm

Our pick for tonight is C’mon C’mon, a movie we’re almost 100% certain you haven’t even heard of before, let alone seen. When his sister asks him to mind her son, a radio journalist (Joaquin Phoenix) heads off on a cross-country road trip to show his nephew more of America. On a budget of $8 million, the movie made just $4 million at the box office (it was released mid-pandemic), but with a score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, this gorgeous drama is definitely worth your time.

C’mon C’mon is currently unavailable on any streaming service, but can be purchased on Rakuten TV and Apple TV.

Fragments of Paradise – FilmFour – 1.25am

A brilliant documentary on the life of filmmaker Jonas Mekas, featuring Martin Scorsese, John Waters and Jim Jarmusch, among many others.

Love, Simon – Channel 4 – 1.55am

A very cute rom-com about high-schooler Simon who has been keeping his sexuality a secret, made all the more difficult when he falls in love with one of his classmates.
