A powerful Irish prison thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Another of tonight’s movies on TV features the single most unsettling scene in cinema history.

Welcome to your Thursday evening movie menu! Loads to choose from, starting with…

Pacific Rim Uprising – FilmFour – 6.50pm
The sequel to the Robots Versus Monsters epic, this time fronted by John Boyega. Its not clever, but it is fun.

Henry V – BBC Four – 8pm
Kenneth Branagh’s much-loved adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic text.

Goldeneye – ITV4 – 8pm
The first and best of Pierce Brosnan’s outings as 007.

Little Nicky – Comedy Central – 9pm
What if Adam Sandler was the son of the Devil? Nothing too funny or interesting, as it turns out.

Sinister – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm
According to science, this is the scariest movie ever made.

London Has Fallen – FilmFour – 9pm
The sequel to Olympus Has Fallen shifts the action from The White House to London. It isn’t very good.

Maze – RTÉ 2 – 9.40pm

Our main pick for tonight is Maze, a very good Irish prison thriller drama. It is based on the true story of of Europe’s biggest prison escape since the Second World War. Tom Vaughn-Lawlor headlines a very good cast, as one of the 38 IRA prisoners who break out of Northern Ireland’s Maze prison in 1983. If you miss it on TV tonight, Maze is also available to rent on Rakuten TV, Sky Store and Google Play.

Don’t Look Now – BBC Four – 10.10pm
Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie star in this dark psychological horror about grieving parents who head to Venice to deal with a recent loss.

Bone Tomahawk – AMC – 10.30pm
A brilliant but unsettling western horror starring Kurt Russell and Patrick Wilson. Features arguably the single most upsetting scene in cinema history. So… yeah, prepare yourself for that.

Hitman – FilmFour – 10.55pm
Timothy Olyphant headlines this not-great adaptation of the hit video game series.

Seeking A Friend For The End of the World – AMC – 12.40am
In the hours before an asteroid ends all life on the planet, Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley find themselves heading off on a road trip together.

A Fantastic Woman – FilmFour – 12.45am
A magnificent drama (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) about a transgender woman who has her life put into the spotlight when her older partner passes away suddenly.
