From the director of The Raid. Enough said.
The Raid is the greatest action film of the decade. We’re sorry John Wick, please don’t come to our home and fire a bullet into our skull because as much as we love the Boogeyman, he has never impaled someone on the frame of a door.
This being said, he did kill someone with a pencil but still, as we’ve frequently stated, The Raid is a stunning piece of work.
Another film that came like a bolt from the blue was Adam Wingard’s wonderful thriller/dark comedy/80’s throwback, The Guest. Low and behold, we’re massive fans of that film too as seen by this glowing recommendation, but a large reason why The Guest was so good is due to Dan Stevens’ performance.
Like a weird hybrid of The Terminator, Jason Bourne and Halloween’s Michael Myers, his unhinged yet oddly charismatic performance was absolutely magnetic.
Well, in Apostle, Stevens will be teaming up with the director of The Raid films (Gareth Evans) and it sounds like an instant classic.
Ok, what’s it about?
London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen).
As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far more evil than he could have imagined.
Apostle is a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.
Christ. This sounds like The Wicker Man spliced with Shutter Island and The Raid. HELL. YES!
For anyone that has followed Evans’ career, he has previously dabbled in the occult – not literally – but he did make a stunning segment for VHS/2 called Safe Haven which is an outstanding horror film. – it’s also f**king bonkers.
The film will be released on Netflix on October 12, 2018 – just in time for Halloween season.
