Next film from the world’s coolest director will “piss off a lot of racists” and it has a stunning cast

Paul Moore

From the director of What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok. This will be amazing!

In the interest of fairness, we’ve never hid our man crush on Taika Waititi and we’re never going to.

Aside from directing the utterly brilliant What We Do in the Shadows (more on that here), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (our favourite film of 2016) and Thor: Ragnarok (our love letter to Korg can be found here), he’s also one of the most interesting filmmakers alive.

Aside from working with the Flight of the Conchords lads, Waititi is also one of – if not THE – funniest director to follow on Twitter and as seen in the interview below, he’s wonderful company to be around.

With the TV show that’s based on What We Do in the Shadows, a documentary about the All Blacks and another WWDITS spinoff that’s based on the paranormal activities in Wellington, the New Zealander is clearly a very busy man.

This being said, he has started principal photography on his next film and it sounds like an absolute riot.

The film is written and directed by Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok) and stars Golden Globe-nominated Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Infinity War, Lost in Translation), Academy Award-winner Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Way Way Back), Rebel Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie and Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo.

Ok, what’s it about?

In Jojo Rabbit, Waititi will bring his signature style of humour and pathos to a World War II satire. The story follows an awkward young German boy (Roman Griffin) raised by a single mother (Scarlett Johansson), and whose only ally is his imaginary friend Hitler (Waititi). His naïve patriotism is tested when he meets a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) who upends his world views, forcing him to face his biggest fears.

Speaking about the film, Waititi said: “I’m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire. We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.”

“Taika is a master at bringing honesty and humanity to the surface in any story, all while allowing us to laugh. We could not be more thrilled to join him in the remarkable journey of Jojo Rabbit,” said Presidents of Production Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

Hell, if it’s half as good as Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Boy, Thor: Ragnarok, Eagle vs. Shark or What We Do in the Shadows, we’re sold.
