OFFICIAL: The superb What We Do in the Shadows TV show will air on BBC2

Paul Moore

95% on Rotten Tomatoes and just as good as the fantastic film.

There’s an early moment in God’s* film What We Do in the Shadows where we knew that the vampire mockumentary was destined to become a cult classic.

At the start of the film, we’re introduced to the array of vampires as they go about their daily chores and tasks. Deacon turns to the camera and fills us in on his backstory.

“One day I was selling my wares, and I walked past this old, creepy castle, and I look at it and think, “‘Very old and creepy”. And then this creature flies at me! It dragged me back to this dark dungeon, and bit into my neck. And just at the point of death… this creature forced me to suck its foul blood. And then it opened it’s wings, like this, and hovered above me screeching, “Now… You are vampire!” And it was Petyr. And we’re still friends today,” he said.

From that moment on, we were absolutely hooked on the adventures of Viago, Deacon, Vladislav, Petyr, Stu and the werewolves – remember, they’re not swearwolves – and we’ve kept a close eye on the TV adaptation of the beloved horror-comedy.

Even before the first season ended this week in the US, Season 2 of the show was already commissioned and we’re delighted to say that What We Do in the Shadows will premiere on 19 May at 21:45 on BBC Two.

The co-writer/co-director/star of the original film, Jemaine Clement, confirmed the news on Twitter and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

In terms of reviews, the TV adaptation has really impressed fans and critics alike.

At present, the show has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the LA Times calling it “carefully crafted and hilarious”.

Elsewhere, The Hollywood Reporter said that “What We Do in the Shadows becomes addictively, ridiculously funny – part droll look at everyday vamp-ness and part inspired family sitcom. This series won’t be for everybody, but there’s nothing else quite like it.”

As for the plot, it’s just like the film because the show takes a look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of three vampires who’ve lived together for over 100 years in Staten Island.

Take a look at what’s in store.

*By the way, God is Taika Waititi.
