Stephen Porzio

The Best Picture nominee at the Oscars was directed by Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson.

Stuck for something to watch this Wednesday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Star Trek Into Darkness – Film Four – 9pm

In this action-packed sequel to J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and the crew of USS Enterprise are sent to the Klingon homeworld seeking former Starfleet member-turned terrorist known as John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch).

The Innkeepers – Horror Channel – 10.50pm

During the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) determined to reveal the hotel’s haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check-in for a stay.

This creepy and moody 2011 indie horror is written and directed by Ti West, who is perhaps best known for contributing to cult favourite anthology flick V/H/S.

The Outlaw Josey Wales – Turner Classic Movies – 10.55pm

Missouri farmer Josey Wales (played by the movie’s director Clint Eastwood) joins a Confederate guerrilla unit and winds up on the run from the Union soldiers who murdered his family.

Eastwood has starred in and directed a lot of epic Westerns. So to say The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of his best is high praise indeed.

The Bling Ring – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Inspired by actual events, a group of fame-obsessed teenagers (one of whom is played by Harry Potter’s Emma Watson) use the internet to track celebrities’ whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

This satirical crime film is from acclaimed writer-director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Somewhere).

Room – Film Four – 11.40pm

Held captive for seven years in an enclosed space, a woman (Brie Larson) and her young son (Jacob Tremblay) finally gain their freedom, allowing the boy to experience the outside world for the first time.

Based on a novel by Irish writer Emma Donoghue, who also penned this movie adaptation, Room begins as an extremely tense and harrowing survival thriller, before evolving into a hugely emotional exploration of how a mother and son’s love can withstand even the worst horrors.

Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson (Adam & Paul, Normal People) directs the film in a way that feels both authentic yet sensitive. Meanwhile, Larson was rightly awarded a Best Actress Oscar for her performance.

Eyes of Laura Mars – True Movies – 11.45pm

A famous fashion photographer (Faye Dunaway) develops a disturbing ability to see through the eyes of a killer.

John Carpenter co-wrote this fun, stylish horror which feels like an American take on the old Italian giallo sub-genre.
