One of the best zombie films ever is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Comedy-horror fans should check this out.

The weekend is here. As such, why not kick back on the sofa with one of these fine flicks on TV this evening.

The Bourne Ultimatum – RTÉ Two – 9pm

In the third and best of the action-thriller franchise, amnesiac Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) dodges a ruthless CIA official and his agents from a new assassination program while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery – True Movies – 9pm

A world-class playboy and part-time secret agent from the 1960s (Mike Myers) emerges after 30 years in a cryogenic state to battle with his nemesis Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers).

One of the most quotable comedies of all time.

Welcome to the Jungle – Comedy Central – 9pm

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars a bounty hunter who travels to Brazil to retrieve his employer’s son (Seann William Scott). Christopher Walken plays the villain.

Also known as The Rundown in some territories, Welcome to the Jungle was one of Johnson’s first lead roles and is a lot of fun.

This Must Be the Place – TG4 – 11pm

Cheyenne (Sean Penn), a retired rock star living off his royalties in Dublin, returns to the US to find the Nazi war criminal who tormented his father.

Directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, The Young Pope), This Must Be the Place is not quite as good as you want it to be given its great premise. That said, it is interesting and features a cool cameo from Talking Heads’ David Byrne who did the music for the movie.

The Return of the Living Dead – Film Four – 11.25pm

When two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.

Our pick for tonight feels like partly a homage to classic zombie flicks such as Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead but also like a parody of them. It gives viewers all the gory yet stylish carnage they want from the sub-genre, but also adds a ton of sharp and sly meta humour.

The 1985 comedy-horror is also known for introducing the popular concept of zombies eating brains, as well as running and being able to speak.

Pacific Rim: Uprising – Channel 4 – 11.30pm

In this sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s popular monster flick, a young man (John Boyega) leads a new generation of Jaeger pilots against a Kaiju threat.

Uprising is nowhere near as good as the original, but Boyega’s charisma and a couple of decent twists make it worth a watch.
