People aren’t getting the joke about Netflix’s new “thriller” series

Stephen Porzio

The trailer appears to have left some viewers confused.

Netflix has released a trailer for a new series but some viewers don’t appear to understand the hook of the show.

Titled The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, the plot synopsis from the streamer reads:

“For heartbroken Anna (Kristen Bell – Frozen, The Good Place), every day is the same. She sits with her wine, staring out the window, watching life go by without her. But when a handsome neighbor (Tom Riley) and his adorable daughter move in across the street, Anna starts to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

“That is until she witnesses a gruesome murder… Or did she?”

As evident from the show’s long title and certain moments in the trailer – the massive glasses of wine, Anna constantly dropping ceramics – the show is putting a comedic spin on the recent trend of thrillers about women who witness something suspicious but nobody believes them.

Recent examples of this oddly specific sub-genre include The Girl on the Train and this year’s The Woman in the Window, which starred Amy Adams and was also released by Netflix.

However, because the trailer mimics the style of the type of movie it’s parodying so well – particularly the acting and music – various Twitter users seem to believe it’s a more straightforward thriller.

Some also appear to think it’s somehow connected to The Woman in the Window.

Here’s a couple of replies Netflix received when it posted the teaser on Twitter:

“Didn’t something very similar come out this year? Right down to the mixing pills and alcohol?! I feel like I’m losing it now. And it was by Netflix as well???”

“The Woman in the Window movie already explained everything. Idk why this series is needed.”

“Is this related to the movie you just released like 10 minutes ago starring Amy Adams????”

“This looks like the same film from a few months ago. If this is based on a book, there’s going to be some plagiarism going on between the two authors.”

Also, certain commenters did not get the show’s title, which is going for a Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood-type parody name.

“I watched something similar this very year by Netflix. Déjà vu?! Plus the title is … mehh.”

“That’s a terrible name. Just my opinion but how do you expect me to tell everyone it’s great? They’d walk away halfway through me telling them the title.”

As for JOE, we think this looks like it could be fun, perhaps filling the mystery spoof void left since Netflix cancelled the great series American Vandal in 2018 (if you haven’t seen it, check it out).

The Woman in the House… lands on the streaming service on 28 January.
