The Simpsons have done it yet again; officially changing our lives many years after creating their own reality.
Long-running American company Merriam-Webster has added 850 new words to its dictionary, with the pick of the bunch going to ’embiggen’ – a word first made famous in 1996 in the ‘Lisa the Iconoclast’ episode of the show’s seventh season.
Though Lisa was sceptical of the word’s existence following a screening of the Troy McClure-starring Young Jebediah Springfield short film – it’s a perfectly cromulent word, Lisa – ’embiggen’ now takes pride of place as a completely legitimate transitive verb.
A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.
