If you’re looking for something VERY different to binge this weekend, then we fully recommend The Horror Of Dolores Roach, the new series from Oscar-winning producer Jason Blum (Get Out, Insidious, Paranormal Activity).
The show’s official synopsis is as follows: “After an unjust 16-year prison sentence, Dolores Roach returns to a gentrified Washington Heights, where she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis, who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop. When the promise of her newfound stability is quickly threatened, ‘Magic Hands’ Dolores is driven to shocking extremes to survive.”
But they’re really burying the lede with that description, because as the trailer below reveals, she finds herself in a vicious cycle of committing murders, and the bodies being used for meat in the restaurant in her building.
At the time of writing, the horror-comedy show has a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics really appreciating the entertaining darkness throughout:
TV Guide – “A winsome treat in a summer that isn’t brimming with breakout hits.”
Evening Standard – “The Horrors of Dolores Roach is for all those who have sat back and thought: what if Sweeney Todd was remade in the present day, but dialled up to 11?”
The Hollywood Reporter – “It’s simply entertaining to watch Dolores scramble to stay one step ahead of ruin, or slowly embrace the rage threatening to eat her alive from the inside. Think of her story not as a lavish five-course meal to be savoured, but a sizzling fast-food snack: a treat best inhaled by the fistful, over the course of some lazy afternoon.”
All eight episodes of The Horror Of Dolores Roach are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video right now.
