Two great films. Here’s hoping this is just as good.
With the nights getting even longer, it’s very likely that you’ll be looking for a new show to binge watch and at the start of the year, we identified City on a Hill as one of the shows to look out for.
Ben Affleck (director of The Town, Gone Baby Gone and Argo) is producing this one and he’s joined by none other than Matt Damon.
After making his name on the adaptation of Denis Lehane’s Gone Baby Gone, Affleck has proven himself to be a talented filmmaker and we’re very curious to see what his input into this show is like.
Having seen the first trailer, there’s a very strong vibe of Gone Baby Gone and The Town with this one.
The show is set in the early 1990s when Boston was a city living in fear.
Violent crime was commonplace, with criminals becoming more brazen amidst wide-scale corruption and racism within local law enforcement. But this all changed thanks to what was later dubbed ‘The Boston Miracle’.
In this fictionalised account of the events, Kevin Bacon stars as corrupt but venerated FBI veteran Jackie Rohr, who reluctantly teams with DA Decourcy Ward (Aldis Hodge).
When an armoured truck heist in Revere leaves three guards missing, Jackie and Decourcy struggle to align their moral compasses. However, the two men find themselves in a faux-alliance that may, ultimately, turn into something real.
In their review of the drama, The Boston Globe said: “The scope of City on a Hill is more ambitious than most of the Boston stories we’ve seen, including Affleck’s The Town and Gone Baby Gone, and that gives it distinction.”
The Hollywood Reporter, meanwhile, said that the show “feels like a throwback in 2019 because it’s not worried about binge-pacing or whether or not you’ve overcommitted to too many other shows. It has a confidence in its novelistic approach.”
City On a Hill airs on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on Wednesday, 18 September.
Take a look at what’s in store.
