Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith say that they’ll be boycotting this year’s Oscars

#OscarsSoWhite.

Last week’s announcement of the nominees for this year’s Academy Awards were met with delight and celebration in Ireland, largely due to the huge representation of Irish talent among the candidates.

Considering just how happy it’s made us to see our people recognised for their talent, it’s no surprise that the lack of actors, directors and filmmakers of colour has drawn great disappointment from various other subsections of society.

Director Spike Lee, honoured by the Academy last year with an ‘Academy Honourary Award’ has posted a message to Instagram to confirm that he will be boycotting this year’s Oscars, due to the under-representation of non-white people.

Jada Pinkett Smith added her voice to the movement – posting this passionate protest to Twitter.

Smith, whose husband Will Smith was overlooked for the Best Actor category for his role in Concussion, posted a video to Facebook explaining her decision to stay clear of this years Oscars.

We must stand in our power.

It remains to be seen whether more actors and directors will follow their example.
