People are raving about the new TV show that has been hailed as 2016’s best one

Paul Moore

It’s starting very soon.

Let’s be honest, the quality of the films that were released this summer has been massively disappointing but while the standards in your cinema has been slipping, TV continues to go from strength to strength.

Netflix’s Stranger Things has captivated anyone that has seen it while returning shows like Game of Thrones, Daredevil, BoJack Horseman, Mr Robot and Veep continue to impress.

In a year of critically acclaimed shows, one title has stood out from the rest because The Night Of has utterly gripped audiences and critics alike.

What’s it about then? The Night Of is an eight-part series that delves into the intricate story of a murder case in New York City. After a night of partying with a female stranger, a man wakes up to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder.  What the hell happened?

The slow-burning series follows the immediate police investigation and legal proceedings, all the while examining the criminal justice system and the purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused awaits his trial.

Imagine the realism of The Wire and the studious nature of True Detective’s first season but mixed with the biting social commentary and sense of injustice from the Serial podcasts. Yep, it’s that good.

There’s a very impressive list of talent that’s involved in the production, both behind and in front of the camera. The Night Of is co-created by Steve Zaillian (writer of Schindler’s List, American Gangster, Moneyball) and author Richard Price (he wrote episodes of The Wire), and it’s based on the British drama Criminal Justice.

The show stars John Turturro ( The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink) and Riz Ahmed – he’s going to be a massive star with his upcoming role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story adding to his already impressive performances in Nightcrawler, Four Lions and Jason Bourne.

If you need further proof of The Night Of’s credentials then this was going to be the next acting project for the late, great James Gandolfini before his sad passing. If this story was good enough to make Tony Soprano himself come back to television then you know it’s good. Here’s what people have been saying about it already.

The Night Of premieres on Sky Atlantic on September 1st.
