We’ve missed you Mulder and Scully.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are set to reprise their most famous roles as alien-seeking detectives in the after Fox confirmed that The X-Files will be returning after a 13-year absence.

There has been a movie in the intervening period, ‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’, which was released in 2008, but the response to it was mixed to say the least.

The TV show, which debuted way back in 1993, ran for nine seasons until it was cancelled in 2002, but it attracted a huge following around the world during its peak years and was as popular in Ireland as it was anywhere else.

Whether its popularity in Ireland was down to the fact that Boyle in Roscommon is something of a hotbed for paranormal activity we’re not sure, but we couldn’t get enough of it in the mid-‘90s.

For the time being, the plan is only to make six new episodes and production will start in the summer. When the episodes will be broadcast has not yet been revealed.

Commenting on the show’s return, creator Chris Carter said: “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny certainly seem excited about the show’s return anyway and so are we.
