This programme about stags and hens in Leitrim on RTÉ sounds like a must-watch this Christmas

Conor Heneghan

Worth watching for the title alone.

Many of you reading this have probably had the experience of a stag or a hen party in the lovely town of Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim.

Leitrim’s county town has developed a reputation as one of the stag capitals of Ireland over the years; safe to say if you visit it of a weekend, you’re bound to run into several groups of lads and ladies from out of town determined to have a damn good time.

Such is Carrick’s reputation as a stag destination, in fact, that it is to be the subject of a programme, ingeniously titled Carrick-On-Stag, on RTÉ as part of the station’s Christmas line-up.

Carrick On Shannon

The blurb is even more spectacular than we hoped.

“In Carrick-On-Stag, we join ‘brides and grooms to be’ for one last raucous weekend before they get married.

“Every weekend Carrick-on-Shannon is besieged with an influx of likely lads and good time gals, determined to show their brides and grooms a good time. The Leitrim town has quickly become the unofficial stag & hen capital of the country.

“Over the course of one hectic weekend we join the mayhem as we follow three groups of hens and stags; from the Conor McGregor of the stripping world to catching cocks on a local farm to a Brazilian model who is happy to let it all hang out, we get down and dirty on this weekend to remember.”

The programme is just one of a number of offerings on a busy Christmas schedule for RTÉ.

You can check out all the movies that will be shown over the festive season here, while there’s also Christmas specials from Mrs. Brown’s Boys and Bridget and Eamon and a look back at those memorable few weeks at the Euros in the summer in EURO 2016: Two Shades of Green.

Given the year that we’ve had, the RTE News Review 2016 promises to make for essential, if perhaps gloomy, television, while there’ll also be musical offerings from Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter and Gavin James and a big New Year’s Eve show hosted by Claire Byrne, Bryan Dobson Aidan Power and Kathryn Thomas.
