TWEETS: There was a huge reaction from viewers to the I Am Immigrant documentary on RTE 2

Conor Heneghan

It got a lot of people talking.

‘I am Immigrant’, the second part of a three-part documentary series on identity in Ireland, aired on RTE 2 tonight and very much lived up to the promise of the previews, one of which you may have seen elsewhere on the site today.

Over the course of a few weeks, a team from Motive television, who have been behind a number of successful Irish documentaries in the past, followed a cross section of newly arrived immigrants and others who have been here for extended periods in an effort to establish the environment that exists for immigrants in Ireland today.

It also documented the attitudes of those whose attitude to immigrants in this country is somewhat hostile, such as Pediga Ireland, some of whose members were involved in a nasty confrontation on the Luas while on their way to launch the Irish branch of Pediga outside the GPO.

It made for uncomfortable viewing at times, but it was fascinating at the same time and the reaction of viewers on Twitter spoke volumes for the programme’s quality and the relevance of the subject matter in today’s Ireland.
