Antiviral is a new Canadian thriller that shows just how far celebrity obsession could go.
By Genna Patterson
Canadian movie Antiviral tells the story of Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones), a man working for The Lucas Clinic, a company that makes money from infecting fans with viruses taken from celebrities, so they can feel more connected to them.
March begins to smuggle the viruses out of his own body to make extra cash but after his donor celebrity dies, he becomes worried that he is doomed with her illness. Syd must try to find a cure while in the throws of hallucinations and fever.

Canadian director Brendan Cronenberg created the movie’s story after watching an interview with Sarah Michelle Gellar on Jimmy Kimmel where she warned the audience she might sneeze on them. The audience cheered, delighted to be getting her germs and influenza.
The movie competed in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and has since been trimmed by six minutes by Cronenberg to tighten up the story. The re-edited movie was a co-winner at the Toronto Film Festival with Jason Buxton’s Blackbird.
Antiviral is due for release at The Lighthouse Cinema, Smithfield on February 8.
