VIDEO: Christy Moore on Ed Sheeran, Croke Park and a special gift

Tony Cuddihy

Christy Moore has spoken about why he turned down the chance to perform with Ed Sheeran at Croke Park last summer.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on Friday night, Christy talked about his friendship with the young singer and how Sheeran visited his home on the day of one of his massive gigs at Croker.

“It was amazing that he came and visited the house,” Moore told Tubridy. “And he came and visited us in the house on the afternoon that he was playing in Croke Park – and he was as cool and as laidback. A lovely guy.”

Sheeran invited Moore to join him on stage, but Christy – realising the difference in their target audience – turned it down.

The Kildare also revealed how, six weeks afterwards, a gift arrived from Sheeran.

“There was a knock on the door – I thought it was a mistake,” he said. “It was delivery of a guitar. He had this guitar specially made for me as a gift, made by the wonderful guitar maker George Lowden up in Downpatrick.

“He presented me with this gift of a new guitar, which is the most beautiful instrument I’ve ever held. What a beautiful thing to do.”
