V/H/S follows in the footsteps of handy cam horrors such as The Blair Witch, Cloverfield and Quarantine.

By Genna Patterson

V/H/S is the latest in a number of horror movies that use ‘found footage’ to create a realistic and therefore more terrifying viewing experience. This movie goes further, it compiles 5 short ‘found films’ into one, linked together by one initial story in a horror anthology.

The initial story concerns a group of young men breaking into a house to steal a videotape for an unnamed third party. Once in the house, they discover the owner, an old man, is dead in his chair and so they roam the house trying to identify the wanted videotape in a sea of unmarked tapes.

One of the crew starts to watch the tape that the old man was watching before he died (haven’t they seen The Ring?). By watching the tapes, the other stories are linked into the first and as each tape ends, footage from the housebreakers is intercut.

The shorts are written and directed by Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Ti West, Glen McQuaid and Joe Swanberg and a directing quartet known as Radio Silence. Each tape or story will have something for each type of horror fan, from female/monster changlings to paranormal activity to a blair witch homage.

Check out the trailer to see what’s in store.

V/H/S is released January 18.
