Joe Dolan would be turning in his grave.
We’ll hold our hands up, there are plenty of town and village names in Ireland that must be hard to pronounce for somebody who’s never heard of them before. No offence to residents of the following places but we’re thinking of towns like Oughterard in Galway, Graiguenamanagh in Kilkenny and the coldest town in Ireland, Birr in County Offaly. Seriously, Birr?* *We’re obviously just joking.
But Mullingar wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of the list, I mean it’s not that hard to pronounce Mull-in-gar, right? Or so you’d think.
It certainly seemed pretty damn hard for a presenter on a US television show, who referenced the Westmeath town when talking about Debra Messing’s role in the play, ‘Outside Mullingar’ on Broadway.
We’re not going to even try and describe her attempt at pronouncing it (see and hear for yourself above) but almost equally as disturbing is the ‘yay’ sound she makes immediately after doing so.
What the hell was that?
