It’s now the most nominated Irish production ever. Fantastic.
While Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born might still be the favourites in the Oscar race, there’s no denying where the Irish interest lies because today has been a day to remember for Ireland’s Element Pictures.
After a few brilliant years that saw them produce the likes of Room, The Lobster, The Guard, The Killing of A Sacred Deer, and The Little Stranger, they’ve now set the record for the Irish production that has the most Oscar nominations.
If they happen to meet the team that worked on Alfonso Cuaron’s brilliant film Roma, they’ll definitely be sharing a few drinks because both films received ten nominations each across the various categories.
Aside from Roma, Yorgos Lanthimos‘ film will be competing with Black Panther, BlackKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, A Star Is Born, and Vice for the Best Picture accolade.
The Favourite also picked up nominations for Best Director, Best Actress for Colman, joint Supporting Actress for Stone and Weisz, and Best Original Screenplay.
A few weeks ago, JOE’s Rory Cashin caught up with Yorgos Lanthimos to discuss his love of Ireland, making The Favourite, and why he opted for a very different cast for the Oscar-nominated film.
After their nomination for Best Picture was read out, do you think the crew of The Favourite were pleased?
Well, let’s just say that you could probably hear these happy screams in Hollywood!
Take a look.
