We don’t think the boat, nor any boat for that matter, is capable of such speeds.
In the last few weeks, especially if you’re from Cork or have any interest in life at sea, you may have heard of a boat called ‘Thunder Child’.
The boat, a 60-foot, high speed search and rescue vessel which is valued at in excess of €1 million, was launched in Cork harbour last month by Frank Kowalski of Safehaven Marine.
This year, Kowalski plans to circumnavigate Ireland via Rockall, an uninhabitable rock in the Atlantic (approximately 460km north west of Malin Head), the ownership of which has been something of a thorny subject in the past.
Thunder Child was the subject of a report by Paschal Sheehy on RTÉ News on Tuesday evening and Paschal may have been a little off when transferring the speed Thunder Child is capable of from knots to kilometres per hour.
A few people on social media were quick to point out the miscalculation.
Order of magnitude error by @PaschalSheehy there on @rtenews stating that boat was capable of speeds of one thousand km/h !

Boat on #rtenews supposed to go at over 1000 kph! I think Paschal Sheehy is losing the run of himself. Knew he always over-hyped #Cork but..

@PaschalSheehy 60 knots is more than 1000kph? Now that's a marketing tool not many will fall for. #mathsgrindsneeded #boatfasterthanplane

@rtenews Bit of a blunder by Paschal Sheehy there……"60 knots is more than 1000kph"………eh, I don't think so!
— Barry Keane (@BarryzahZ) January 3, 2017
@rte @PascalSheehy Am I being a bit thick or is 1000km per hr a bit too fast for a boat?!! 😜#thunderchild

An innocent mistake by Paschal we’re sure, unless it really can travel at speeds of 1,000km/h, which would be some sight indeed.
