14 Irish people tell us their one favourite memory from Electric Picnic

Make your own memories this weekend

Joe Harrington

Make your own memories this weekend.

It’s almost time to pack your bags, tent and sleeping bag for the annual trip to Stradbally in Laois for Electric Picnic.

The festival has been running for the last eleven years and it’s the biggest weekend of the year for many music fans in Ireland.

Hundred of thousands of people made the trip and so many memories have been made down through the years.

We asked JOE readers to tell us their favourite EP moment, here are 14 of the best responses.

Electric Picnic Festival 2013 - Day 1

Kevin O’Sullivan: “Saw Bjork there a few years ago, she was amazing! Planetary Assault Systems too for some proper naughty techno.”

Niamh Moran Myers: “Lost two tickets on the way down from Dundalk. Went home and searched the house to no avail, turned back to Electric Picnic with just our receipts. Got to the gate and the lady (probably understandably) wasn’t paying any heed.

“Borrowed money there and then and bought two new tickets (bringing total ticket spend to a thousand euro). The following morning my sister stayed in our caravan and lo and behold what did she find down the side of the sofa? TWO SHINY ELECTRIC PICNIC TICKETS. I have never recovered.”

Karen O’Connor: “My wonderful wedding in the inflatable church it was packed to the inflatable rafters the groom chickened out, but my now ex husband Patrick Moloney stepped in and was brilliant we even had a divorce meal a month later before he moved to NZ.

“Today he turns 30 so Happy Birthday to my wonderful ex inflatable husband it was fun while it lasted.”

Tanya O Regan: “Wearing all neon and head light zagga bongs and been asked by everyone don’t move yer our meeting point for our friends, like a landmark for the lost souls lol.”

Eoin Ronan: “I was sitting in the Body and Soul area surrounded by mates, watching the sun set while lads on stilts threw confetti in our faces. It was weird but it reminds me of good time.”

Kate Murphy: “Experiencing Bjork live in 2013 is my favourite EP memory. It was the most magical performance.”

Harry Harty: “In my first EP many moons ago I was running around one night getting as many people to join me in group cats tumbles. A one point I had about a dozen people joining me, rolling around in front of the main stage around 11pm at night….because we could!!”

Shane O’Connor: “It was the Saturday night of EP 2009 that will stay with me forever! Brian Wilson on the main stage as the sun set followed by Madness and then topped off with 2ManyDJs… How perfect was that lineup?!”

Ruairi O’Hagan: “Toots from Toots and The Maytals coming out on stage for their opening number, mumbling something into the mic before throwing it on to the floor in disgust, never to return, leaving their guitarist to awkwardly explain that he was “tired” from touring. The band eventually played on without him and put on an excellent show.”

Tricia Gallagher: “One of many memories!! After an epic time at The Cure, EP 2012!!Went to the Silent Disco where these artist dudes on stage drew my rabbit friend!! I named him Robert Smith!! Still have him.”

Elaine Doyle: “I was in a tree house in body and soul with a random group of people. I was singing proud mary by tina turner at the top of my lungs. I don’t have a note in my head but that’s the magic of EP.

“Everything’s quite tribal. I finished my performance with mentioning it was my mates birthday and the entire group wrapped her in lights and gave her the birthday bumps in this tiny treehouse squashed full of people. Best birthday ever (and it wasn’t even mine.”

Doris Murphy: One of my funniest memories is doing gymnastics to clear the hangovers with Ian Tilson.

Jango Fleming: Spending nearly two hours nearly passing out trying to blow up my cousin Laura Ryan’s bed. It got the better of me so walked up to salty dog in search of power and a plug.

“I saw a guy on stage early in the day setting up sound so I ask nicely to plug bed pump in and he agrees so I decided to walk back to my cousin tents.

“I blew it up only to discover the bed was too big for the tent so we were on ground for the weekend, but fun was had with lots of beer to help our pain.”
