JOE’s Song Of The Day #483: Tribal Dance – ‘Flongo’

JOE

Ones to watch.

Tribal Dance is a progressive post-punk/math rock trio from Dublin. Formed by the desire to play live shows, they played their first headline show in The Grand Social in October 2015.

They quickly gained the attention of local music blogs and promoters from their energetic and intense live performances.

Influenced by musical ideas of early Foals and Biffy Clyro, their songs don’t follow the traditional verse/chorus/verse structure, instead go on a tangent of experimentation that combines upbeat dance rhythms, dark dissonant riffs and chords, screaming vocals and thumping basslines.

They blend many genres and musical ideas into songs and follow wherever the song takes them, from heavy distorted riffs, to math-pop jams, to slow instrumental experimental bridges, to long dramatic build ups.

Constant changes in dynamics and ideas within songs lead to an intense, dramatic and exciting live performance. Combining multiple genres, classic and contemporary, Tribal Dance create an extremely engaging live performance too.

They have played alongside well established Irish artists such as Alex Smyth, Le Boom, Spudgun, Vernon Jane, Mr. Sands and have taken part in Whelan’s Summer Ones to Watch Festival 2016 and will be playing Arcadian Field Festival 2017.

The band want people to keep in mind that the single “Flongo” is comparable to the appetiser in a four-course dinner.

The single “Flongo” is meant to introduce people to the music of Tribal Dance, its relatively simplistic structure and lyrical format are intentional for the reason that it reflects how restrictive song writing (i.e. forcing yourself to play in a more simplistic manner) can have a positive effect on the music.

However, the following singles will get more complex in nature.

Here’s their new single, Flongo.
