Sinéad’s brother John appeared on Liveline today.
John O’Connor, the brother of Sinead O’Connor, has spent the anniversary of his late sister’s passing speaking on RTÉ’s Liveline programme.
O’Connor was motivated to dial in after a poor-quality waxwork design of Sinéad was unveiled at the Dublin Wax Museum on Thursday.
Paddy Dunning from the wax museum was criticised by Mr O’Connor for not consulting the O’Connor family before the “hideous” artpiece was shared publicly.
Mr Dunning came onto the programme to apologise for any hurt caused, explaining that the artpiece was rushed in order to be public in time for Sinéad’s anniversary.
“You mightn’t have slept last night”, said John O’Connor, “but I certainly didn’t”.
He went on to describe the depiction of his sister as “completely unfair”, to which Paddy again apologised.
“The world may have lost a star – and they did – but I lost a sister.
“It just should not have been put there without checking with somebody belonging to her ‘is this alright?’, but sure you knew it wasn’t when you saw it.”
One caller, Thomas, was especially critical of everyone behind the waxwork.
“Let’s ask Paddy…when he seen that, did he think that would look like anything that would resemble Sinéad O’Connor, because I can’t believe he did.
“Why did he put that on show? It’s an absolute disgrace. “
“As I said earlier, my heart sank. I have taken the decision to take the statue out,” responded Paddy.
“It’s not fit enough to go in Dunnes Stores’ window to advertise a two euro dress, never mind to put it up as a tribute to Sinéad O’Connor,” replied a passionate Paddy.
Later in the programme, another caller, Anne, described the waxwork as “grotesque”, especially as Sinéad was “the most beautiful woman”.
It was later revealed by John O’Connor that a tribute to Sinéad is being planned in Bray.
A statue of Sinéad O’Connor in Dublin City Centre would not be permitted for another nine years, as ten years must pass since a death before any such tribute to a can be sanctioned under local law.
