The Gloaming win the Meteor Choice Prize award for Irish album of the year

It's a cracking record.

It’s a cracking record.

It’s a good year for fans of trad music mixed with rock, jazz and elements of classical music as The Gloaming’s self-entitled album has been named as the Meteor Choice Prize winner of the year.

The event took place tonight in Vicar Street as fellow nominees James Vincent McMorrow, The Delerentos, The Riptide Movement and We Cut Corners all gave stellar performances.

The Gloaming though took the main prize but they weren’t able to get their hands on it as they’re currently touring in Australia at the moment but their partners accepted it on their behalf. Aww.

Aphex Twin, Hozier, U2 and Damien Rice may not have graced the awards with their presence but they were nice enough to leave a video message for those in attendance.

We’re delighted to see The Gloaming win because it was one of the most unique sounding Irish records that we heard in a long time and we have a feeling that a fair few people will be picking up a copy tomorrow.

The band will receive a €10,000 prize granted by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and Irish Recorded Music Association (IMRA).

Elsewhere, The Script won Song of the Year with their track Superheroes in a public vote.
