The hugely popular Metropolis Festival is back for another impossibly cool weekend of music and culture.

Some huge names will be gracing the RDS over the upcoming weekend. Some big talents you’ve grown up with alongside some big talents you’ve yet to fall in love with. Here’s our quick list of a few must-see acts on in the Metropolis Festival this weekend.

Grace Jones

Whether you know Grace Jones for her music, her controversial talk show appearances or as Christopher Walken’s partner and Roger Moore’s foe in View To A Kill, there’s no denying that the lady is a living legend. She recently played the Olympia to huge acclaim earlier this year and now she’s back to wow Dublin audiences again.

The Sugarhill Gang

The legendary hip- hop group from Sugar Hill, Harlem are pioneers of rap. Their 1979 hit Rapper’s Delight is credited with introducing hip-hop to people all over the world. In VH1’s recent 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs, Rapper’s Delight polled at number 2. It is also included in NPR‘s list of the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century. They’ve still got it (check out the clip above of them performing on Conan on Hallowe’en) so don’t miss out on your chance to see a slice of Americana in the flesh.

Girl Band

One of the coolest bands to come out of Dublin in recent years, Girl Band are perched on the precipice of greatness. Their most recent album, Holding Hands With Jamie, was an explosion of ideas and energy. Their live shows aren’t bad either (for maximum effect, get as close up to the front of the stage as possible). If you’ve already seen them, they’ll already be on your itinerary. If you haven’t, prepare to be converted.

James Earley

There’s more to the Metropolis Festival than just music, and this years sponsor Bulmers have commissioned works by some of the most exciting graffiti artists in the city. James Earley is one of this artists. The family business of stained glass windows has clearly had an effect on the young Dubliner whose unique form of street art can be seen around the city.

Paul Kalkbrenner

German DJ and electronic producer’s live show is unmissable. His single “Sky and Sand” was a huge hit a few years ago across continental Europe and his gigs have delighted audiences the world over.
